Chapter 18

A door slams in the hallway, and Lex jump from a restless sleep of maybe a couple of hours total. She decided the safest place to sleep was on a barstool. VP walks up and looks at her with concern. “Lex? What’re you doing here? Out here?”

“It’s a long story. A long, disturbing story. I was going to go back to Colt’s apartment, but he locked it.”

“Where is he?”

She shrugs. “I’m not sure. He saw something that upset him, and he took off. I was going to call a rideshare or maybe Ky, but my phone and wallet are in Colt’s room.”

Her father nods down the hallway, and she follows him as he pulls out a key, unlocking the apartment for her to get her things. “You two have a fight?”

“No,” she says as they walk back out to the main room.

“But he just left you here?”

“Uh, yeah,” she says and pulls at the long sleeves of the sweatshirt.

He shakes his head. “You slept at the bar?”

“I figured it was the least infected area to rest.”

Chuckling, he nods. “That’s probably true. Except the Chapel. The table may not have been much more comfortable, but at least it woulda been okay.”

Scrunching her nose, she looks at him. “But would it?”

Colt storms inside and tosses a glance at them, shock appearing on his face as though he just realized he left his girlfriend when he took off. “Sorry, Lex,” he says and storms past the two of them down the hallway.

“Hey, get back here!” VP shouts.

Stopping in his tracks, he turns around to face his vice president. “What?”

“What? You left my daughter behind to sleep on a fucking barstool, and all you’re going to say is ‘sorry’?”

“Why didn’t you go back to the apartment?” Colt asks, glaring at her.

Her eyes go wide and looks at her wallet in her hands. “You locked it.”

“No, I didn’t. I never fucking lock it.”

“Watch it,” VP snaps. “It was locked because I had to unlock it, so she could get her phone and wallet. The only other option she would have had is to walk back to your house, which is an extremely unsafe option. You leaving her here like you did was a dick move, Colt.”

Colt glares at the man. “Or she could have gone to your room and asked for your help, but you’ve proven to be absent and dismissive of her needs since the day she was born, so I guess we’re both assholes.”

VP moves to smack the man, but Lex puts her hands on her father’s arm to stop him. “Go do whatever the fuck you were going to do.”

He takes off, and Lex sighs. “He’s not himself. Something happened last night, and it really upset him. He didn’t mean it.”

“You could have called me. You know that, right?”

“I didn’t have my phone,” she says weakly and looks down the hallway realizing Colt went to find his father. “Besides, someone had to wake up eventually.”

“How bad are we talking, here, Lex?”
